第三祖商那和修。亦曰舍那婆斯。摩突羅國人。姓毘舍多氏在母之胎六年生。有自然之服隨身而長。出家為阿難之徒。預受佛記居優留茶伽藍。先伏其地之二火龍。然後領眾處之。及其將入涅槃。乃以法付其弟子優波毱多。說偈曰。

The Third Patriarch, Śāṇakavāsa, also called Śāṇavāsa, was a man of Mathurā, of the Vaiśya caste. He remained in his mother's womb for six years before being born. He possessed a natural garment that grew along with his body. He left home to become a disciple of Ānanda. Having received the Buddha's prophecy beforehand, he resided at the Urumuṇḍa Monastery. He first subdued the two fire dragons of that land, and only afterwards led the assembly to dwell there. When he was about to enter nirvāṇa, he transmitted the Dharma to his disciple Upagupta, speaking a verse, saying:
