Zhu Dali was a disciple of the twenty-third patriarch, Haklenayaśas. During the reign of Emperor Xian of the Han, he arrived in the city of Luoyang; later he went to Wu, where he met Kang Senghui. Senghui once asked Dali, "Benevolent one, who is your master?" Dali said, "My master is Haklenayaśas." Senghui asked, "Among the disciples of Haklena, how many are like you, benevolent one? And is there anyone who surpasses you?" Dali said, "There are three thousand like me. As for the preeminent one, there is only a single superior person, named Siṃha Bhikṣu. That man secretly received the true Dharma and succeeds to the lineage of my master; he is currently spreading the transformation in the realm of Northern India."
