Narendrayaśas was a native of Kashmir. During the reign of Emperor Xiaojing of the Eastern Wei, he arrived in the capital city of Ye. At first, together with the retired scholar Wan Tianyi, he translated the Uṣṇīṣa-vijaya Dhāraṇī. Later, he said to Tianyi: "The twenty-seven great beings of the various patriarchs of the Western Realm also received and held this scripture. The twenty-seventh patriarch, named Prajñātāra, had a successor disciple whom he brought forth, named Dharmatrāta, who formerly, in the first year of the Zhengguang era during the reign of Emperor Ming of the Wei, arrived in Luoyang; that man also delighted in this scripture." Wan Tianyi said: "Indeed, concerning this great being, I too have heard that he occupied the patriarchal seat and transmitted the Buddha's true Dharma. I do not know in detail whether there was anyone who succeeded him afterwards." Yaśas then answered him with a verse; his words were all hidden allegories. The transmission from the Seven Buddhas down to the twenty-seventh patriarch and the twenty-eighth patriarch, Bodhidharma, was translated by this Yaśas.
