夫善惡報應之說。粲出經典。而愚勃之徒。尚惑之。若證之於事實。亦警覺之一術也。暇日涉獵古傳。采錄僧侶業報之著明者。偶得懷信師自鏡錄。乃歎曰。我思古人實獲我心哉。遂挍鐫之。以廣其傳。且以今所得者若干條。而附乎後云。安永元年壬辰歲八月十四日平安慶證寺玄智。書于南紀鷺森省所。

Now, teachings on the retribution of good and evil are brilliantly set forth in the scriptures, yet foolish and perverse people are still confused about them. If one verifies them with actual facts, this is also a technique for awakening them. In my leisure time I browsed ancient records, gathering and recording conspicuous cases of karmic retribution among monks. Having chanced upon Master Huaixin’s Record of Self-Reflection, I sighed and said: “In contemplating the ancients, this truly captures my own heart!” Thereupon I collated and carved it into blocks to broaden its transmission, and furthermore appended several items that I have now acquired to the end. Written by Genchi of Kyōshō-ji in Heian, on the fourteenth day of the eighth month in the renchen year, the first year of the Any’ei era [1772], at the retirement quarters in Sagimori, Nanki.
