Anciently, several centuries after the Tathāgata's parinirvāṇa, there was a holy monk who transmitted the Dharma, named Saṅghayaśas. He once traveled to the seashore and saw a dwelling. Its halls and pavilions were adorned and all its affairs were wondrous, filled with monks. They engaged in walking meditation and dhyāna, and when noon came, they rang the bell and gathered in the hall. When they finished eating, all the provisions turned into pus and blood. Their bowls struck against one another, their heads and faces were battered, and blood defiled their bodies and robes. They said: 'Why did we begrudge food, so that now we suffer this torment?' Saṅghayaśas stepped forward and asked them. They replied: 'Elder, in our previous lives at the time of Kāśyapa Buddha, we resided together in a monastery. Seeing visiting monks arrive, anger arose in our hearts; we hid and begrudged food and drink, not sharing with them. Because of this stinginess, we now suffer this torment.' Hearing this, Saṅghayaśas felt great fear. Observing in this manner, he shortly attained the holy fruit.
