The vihārasvāmin Huicheng of Qifu Monastery in Fenzhou was rich in wisdom and understood the vinaya rituals. His disciples were dressed in proper robes and caps, numbering in the hundreds, and he enjoyed a splendid reputation in his day. In the sixth month of the third year of the Tiaolu reign era, he contracted an illness and was near his end; for several days he bellowed like an ox, and died soon after. A few days later, a monk of the monastery named Changning, who diligently practiced meditation, suddenly saw Cheng appear at night, his appearance haggard and gaunt, saying, 'Because I misused the property of the Three Jewels, my suffering is severe beyond words. Now I hope to beg a meal from you.' He also told Ning, 'Other offenses are comparatively light, but foremost of all, one must not misuse the property of the saṃghārāma; it must be compensated repeatedly.' At that time there was a monk named Zhigan, who was versed in both learning and practice, diligent and prudent. Cheng said to Ning, 'In this entire prefecture, only this man will be able to escape completely; for the rest it will be very difficult.' He also said, 'Dharma Master Shancheng of Tangxing Monastery also misused the property of the Three Jewels; before long he will undergo retribution.'
