2.63

并州義興寺僧智韜。調露元年忽於夜中。見房內猛火騰炎舉頭數丈。牛頭獄卒森列前後。語韜云。汝自在用僧物。應入地獄。其人悲泣乞救。誓即陪酬。瀝血懇誠至曉獲免。數日昏悶。後乃說之。當即悛革。遂無他故。

The monk Zhitao of Yixing Monastery in Bingzhou suddenly saw in the middle of the night during the first year of the Tiaolu reign era raging flames flaring up several tens of feet in his room, with ox-headed hell wardens lined up densely before and behind him. They said to Tao, 'You misused saṃgha property at will; you ought to enter hell.' He wept in grief and begged for salvation, vowing to make restitution immediately. Shedding blood in utmost sincerity, he was spared by morning. For several days he was dazed and faint, and only later recounted it. He reformed at once, and consequently suffered no further harm.
