Anciently, in the Western Regions, the arhat Upagupta, who transmitted the Dharma, was leading a disciple begging for alms and arrived at the house of a caṇḍāla. There was a son of the caṇḍāla who had attained the fruit of a srotaāpanna, yet had a terrible disease: his entire body was devoured by worms, and his breath was foul and fetid. The disciple asked, "For what reason does a srotaāpanna suffer this retribution?" Upagupta replied, "In a past life, this man entered the monastic life. When he was serving as the karmadāna, there was an arhat in the assembly who suffered from this terrible disease and was making scratching noises. The karmadāna said, 'Are worms eating you that you make such noises?' He then grabbed his arm, dragged him outside, and said, 'Go into the quarters of the caṇḍālas!' The arhat said to him, 'You should be diligent; do not wander back and forth in saṃsāra and suffer torment.' Thereupon, the karmadāna immediately repented. Having repented, he attained the fruit of a srotaāpanna. It is this child today."
