Huilin, surnamed Liu, was a native of Qin Commandery. He was skilled in the various scriptures as well as Zhuangzi and Laozi. He was fond of humorous speech and laughter, and excelled in literary composition; thus his collection filled ten fascicles. Yet by nature he was arrogant and haughty, and rather boastful of himself. His teacher Daoyuan was a monk of learning and practice, whom Emperor Wen of the Song held in high regard. Once Daoyuan visited Fu Liang, and Huilin was already seated there. When Daoyuan arrived, Huilin did not pay him respects. Daoyuan's anger showed on his face, and Fu Liang then punished Huilin with twenty strokes of the cane. Later, Huilin composed the *Treatise on White and Black* to slander and revile the Buddhist teachings. Yan Yanzhi and Zong Bing refuted Huilin's treatise, each writing over ten thousand words. Having slandered his own Dharma, Huilin was banished to Jiaozhou. There he suffered from blindness, and after several years died of bitter indignation. His treatise is fully recorded in the *Hongming ji* of the Liang dynasty śramaṇa Sengyou.
