Zhu Huichi was a native of Xinye and resided at Siceng Monastery in Jiangling. In the second year of Yongchu, he died. His disciples held a seven-day memorial assembly for him. As that day was drawing to dusk and the burning of incense was completed, the śramaṇa Daoxian went to visit Chi's disciples. Arriving in front of the room, he suddenly saw a dim figure resembling a human form. Looking closely, it was Huichi. His appearance and clothing were no different from when he was alive. He said to Xian, 'Friend, is eating meat delicious?' Xian said, 'It is delicious.' Chi said, 'Because I ate meat, I have now fallen into the Hungry Dog Hell.' Daoxian was terrified and had not yet managed to answer, when Chi spoke to him again: 'If you do not believe it, try looking behind my back.' He then turned his back to show Xian, who saw three yellow dogs, their bodies half resembling donkeys, their eyes extremely red, casting light into the room, as if about to devour Chi, but then stopping. Xian was terrified and fainted away; after a long while he revived and recounted the matter in full. Because of this, he repented and reformed.
