During the Kaihuang era of the Sui, there was the monk Shuanghui, whose native place is unknown. Hoping for the stage of non-retrogression throughout his life, he painted ten images of Akṣobhya and also fashioned twelve images of the same Buddha as three-foot-tall standing statues. With single-minded devotion he prayed for a sympathetic response. In a dream he experienced two monks, one calling himself Sun-Light and the other calling himself Delight-Opening, [who asked,] “Do you know the original vows of Akṣobhya?” He replied, “I know them roughly.” The two monks rejoiced, saying, “Excellent! In this turbid, evil age, one such as you takes refuge in Akṣobhya, enters the stage of non-retrogression in a single lifetime, and attains birth in Abhirati!” After waking, he recollected [the Buddha] all the more. Approaching his end, he announced to the assembly, “I am now departing to be reborn in the land of Abhirati!”
