Xiahou Jun was a native of Yongzhou. In the second year of the Xianqing era, he fell gravely ill, and after more than forty days he became delirious, lost consciousness, and died. He found himself condemned to be reborn as an ox. He prayed, saying, “I once received the precepts three times from Master Yin, and I also upheld the Bhaiṣajyaguru-sūtra and personally fashioned an image. Examining myself, I find no fault; why am I sent to suffer like this in the body of an ox?” Jun had already been assigned to a millhouse and subjected to harsh labour for twenty-four days. Later, because an investigation verified that his receiving of the precepts and other deeds were genuine and not false, he was finally spared punishment, revived, and related this matter.
