唐興善寺釋含照。發願圖千佛像。纔寫七佛像。不知九百九十三佛威儀手印。精誠祈請。流泣悔過。夢見九百九十三佛現木葉。歡喜圖寫。流布傳世矣。

During the Tang, the monk Hanzhao of Xingshan Monastery made a vow to paint the images of the Thousand Buddhas. Having only painted the images of the Seven Buddhas, he did not know the deportment and hand-mudrās of the other nine hundred and ninety-three Buddhas. With pure sincerity he prayed, weeping in repentance. In a dream he saw the nine hundred and ninety-three Buddhas appearing on tree leaves. Rejoicing, he painted them and circulated them to be transmitted to the world.
