Anciently, Vajrasattva personally received the principles of the Great Vajradhātu Maṇḍala before Vairocana Buddha. Several centuries later, he transmitted them to the Bodhisattva Nāgārjuna. Several centuries after that, they were transmitted to Nāgabodhi. Nāgabodhi carefully preserved and maintained them, like water transferred from one vessel to another, and transmitted them to Vajrabodhi. Vajrabodhi was a native of the kingdom of Malaya in southern India. He wandered following causes and conditions, benefiting sentient beings wherever he went. Hearing that the Buddha Dharma was greatly flourishing in Mahācīna, he took ship and traveled east, reaching the seacoast. In the eighth year of the Kaiyuan era, he finally arrived at the imperial capital. Thereupon, he broadly propagated the secret teaching and established maṇḍalas. What he accomplished in accordance with the Dharma all brought about auspicious sympathetic responses.
