The monk Daojun cultivated the mindfulness of the Buddha samādhi all his life and took no joy in other practices. At that time, a monk of the same prefecture, Changmin, urged him to copy the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-sūtra. Daojun said, "I cultivate the mindfulness of the Buddha and have no leisure at all; how could I copy it?" Min said, "Prajñā is the direct road to bodhi, the essential path to rebirth. You must transcribe it." Jun refused entirely, saying, "Once I am born in the Pure Land, it will naturally be perfected." That night he dreamed that he reached the seashore and saw a crossing. On the western shore of the sea were adorned halls. Six boys were rowing a boat by the shore. Jun said to the boat boys, "I wish to board the boat to cross to the western shore." The boys said, "You do not believe in the boat; how could you board it?" Jun asked, "How can I believe in the boat?" The boys said, "The boat is Prajñā. Without Prajñā, one cannot cross the ocean of birth and death; how could one be born in that stage of non-retrogression? If you were to board the boat, it would sink." Awakening from the dream, he was terrified and repented of his error, using his robes and bowl [to raise funds] to copy the Prajñā[pāramitā]. On the day the offering was naturally completed, purple clouds came from the west, and music was heard in the sky. Was this not a sympathetic response?
