In the fifth year of Ganlu under the deposed emperor of the former Wei, Zhu Shixing of Rumen lectured on the Small Chapter [Prajñāpāramitā-sūtra]—or, as some say, regularly lectured on the Daoxing bore. He constantly lamented that this translation did not fully convey the principles. Setting out from Chang'an, he crossed the shifting sands and reached Khotan, where he obtained an authentic Sanskrit text of ninety chapters. In that country there were many scholars of the Lesser Vehicle, who slandered him to the king, saying: "A śramaṇa from the land of Han wishes to confuse and disrupt the True Dharma with a Brahman book. Why not burn it? Leaving the land of Han blind and deaf will be Your Majesty's fault." The king thereupon refused to permit him to carry the scripture east. Shixing therefore requested that it be burned as a test of truth. Firewood was then heaped in front of the palace hall. When burned, the scripture remained completely undamaged. The king only then placed faith in it. Shixing sent the scripture back to his home country; it was translated by Zhu Shulan and Mokṣala as the Light-Emitting Prajñāpāramitā (Fangguang bore).
