During the reign of Emperor Wucheng of Qi, beside the Dongkan Mountain in Bingzhou, someone digging the ground saw an area of soil of a yellow-white color. Digging further, he found an object shaped like two human lips, inside of which was a tongue, fresh, crimson, and red. This matter was reported to the throne. The Emperor asked both the monastic and lay communities, but none could understand it. The śramaṇa Master Dawan presented a memorial saying: 'This is merely the retribution of the indestructible six sense organs of one who upholds the Lotus Sūtra. If one completes the recitation a thousand times, there will surely be such a verified sign.' Thereupon, keepers of the Lotus Sūtra were gathered to surround it and recite the sūtra. As soon as their voices began, these miraculous lips and tongue stirred and moved at the same moment. Those who heard and saw it had their hair stand on end. The matter was reported to the throne; an edict ordered that a stone casket be sent, in which it was stored and moved to a room.
