Once there was a bhikṣu who harbored pure faith in his heart, yet transgressed the precepts instituted by the Tathāgata. He appropriated the property of the present saṅgha and the collective property of the saṅghika, putting it to his own use. Later he contracted a severe illness and suffered great pain and distress. At that time, that bhikṣu had no one to save or help him, and uttered loud cries. In that place there was a brahmin who heard his cries and immediately went to the sick bhikṣu. Arousing great compassion and pity, he wrote this Mahāpratisarā-vidyārāja-dhāraṇī for him and tied it beneath his neck; his distress and suffering all ceased, and he then died. Born into the Avīci Hell, the bhikṣu's corpse was interred in a stūpa, bearing the dhāraṇī upon his body. Because of this, the moment that bhikṣu entered the hell, all the pains of those undergoing punishment completely ceased, and all obtained ease and joy. Due to the majestic power and virtue of this dhāraṇī, all the raging flames of the Avīci Hell were extinguished; and so forth.
