In the first year of the Qianfeng reign era [666 CE] of Emperor Gaozong of the Tang, there was a scholar who fell ill and died. After one day and two nights, he only then revived and said: "When I first died, there was an underworld official in red robes who summoned me with an official document. I followed the underworld official to the gate of a great city. The envoy said, 'The Great King within the city is King Xizheng. He summons you with that document.' At that time, in fright and terror, I saw my own right hand emitting a great, bright light that reached straight before the King, surpassing the radiance of the sun and moon. Astonished, the King rose from his seat, joined his palms, and, following the light, pushed his way out through the gate. He asked me, 'Sir, what merit have you cultivated that your right hand emits light?' I immediately replied, 'I have cultivated no other good, nor do I understand the cause of this light.' The King returned inside the city, examined a roll of records, and came out of the city, saying to me with joy: 'Sir, in accordance with the edict of Emperor Gaozong, you copied ten scrolls of the Mahāprajñāpāramitā-sūtra. Writing with the right hand holding the brush, your right hand emits light.' At that moment, I remembered this matter. The King said, 'I release you, sir, to return early.' Then I said to the King, 'I have forgotten the road by which I came.' The King said, 'Follow the light to return.' I immediately followed the King's instruction. Approaching my old house, the light vanished and I revived." When he related these circumstances, weeping with sorrow and joy, he gave up all his possessions to copy the six hundred scrolls. This was personally heard.
