At Faju Monastery below the outer wall of Yizhou under the Tang, there was a painting of Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva, seated back on a rope-chair with legs hanging down, eight or nine inches high. The original image was painted by Zhang Sengyou. In the seventh month of the second year of Linde, a monk of this monastery copied one version of it. It emitted light that suddenly appeared and vanished like a golden ring, largely identical to the light of the original. All those that were subsequently copied and produced one after another likewise emitted light. In the eighth month of that year, an imperial decree ordered a copy to be brought to the palace for offerings. At present, those painted by common folk both inside and outside the capital all emit light when worshipped. We truly know that the Buddha's power is unfathomable. (Each household has a copy; they are not individually cited and recorded.)
