Long ago, during the appearance in the world of Kāśyapa Buddha, there was a householder named Lunxiu and a daughter named Shuta. These two people each offered the seven treasures to Kāśyapa Buddha, requesting his gracious aid. At that time, the World-Honored One told the two of them: "Return directly to your original abode. What you have requested will be achieved and your wishes fulfilled after seventeen days have passed." At that time, the two touched their heads to the ground in homage to the Buddha and returned to their home. When the seventeenth day was fulfilled, that night in a dream the woman Shuta had an auspicious dream, and her joy was beyond compare. First, a bright, radiant solar disk came and entered her womb; second, a shining, full lunar disk came and entered her womb. Having received this auspicious portent, when nine months had passed she gave birth to two sons. The elder brother was named Rizhu (Sun Jewel), and the younger brother was named Yuejing (Moon Mirror), having their names bestowed according to these prior signs. When these two sons had reached only seven days of age, they left household life, went to Kāśyapa Buddha, and practiced his Dharma under the World-Honored Buddha. They constantly made this vow: "In life after life and place after place, may we not be parted, being fellow students and spiritual friends, mutually serving as master and disciple, establishing the True Dharma, perfecting wondrous practices, and being mindful of the single ocean of awakening." The former Rizhu is now Aśvaghoṣa Bodhisattva, [and Yuejing is Nāgārjuna]. For this reason, these two bodhisattvas do not separate, turning together, manifesting their original ground and trace to benefit sentient beings. In the Jin’gang zhengzhi jing it says that Aśvaghoṣa became a buddha in the past named Great Radiance Buddha, and Nāgārjuna was named Wondrous Cloud Sign Buddha. In the Dazhuangyan sanmei jing it says that Aśvaghoṣa became a buddha in the past named Sun Moon Star Light Buddha, and Nāgārjuna was named Wondrous Cloud Sovereign King Tathāgata, and so forth.
