In the nineteenth year of the Zhenyuan era of Emperor Dezong, there was a śramaṇa whose name and dwelling were unknown. He lodged at the shrine of the Lord of Mount Tai and recited the verse on the four impermanences from the new translation of the sūtra. The Lord appeared in a dream and told him: 'Formerly, in the presence of the Buddha, I personally heard this sūtra. The words translated by Master [Kumāra]jīva were plain, yet their meaning and flavor were completely harmonious. Hearing the sound of its reading and recitation makes the body and mind cool and refreshed. As for the new sūtra, its words are extremely elegant, but its meaning and flavor are thin and dilute. The text you keep is furthermore an assistant copy of the sūtra given by Vaiśravaṇa.' When the śramaṇa awakened from the dream, he also took up the old text.
