Formerly, the bhikṣu Huibiao recited the Wuliangyi jing on Wudang Shan. Later, carrying it upon his head, he came out of the mountain and lodged for the night within the mountains. In the first watch of the night, a deva arrived, accompanied by hundreds of thousands of devas as his retinue, to make offerings to the sūtra and to [Hui]biao. [Hui]biao asked who they were. The deva replied, saying: 'We were a flock of bluebirds on Wudang. Having gathered and heard the Wuliangyi jing, when our lives ended we were born in the Trāyastriṃśa Heaven. Wishing to repay your kindness, we have come to pay homage and make offerings. Our original bodies are in a single place at the southwestern corner of the mountain, where we gathered and cast off our forms.' Having spoken of this matter, he suddenly disappeared. [Hui]biao dispatched a messenger to search for the flock of bluebirds, and it was indeed as had been said. Such is the merit of the sūtra; rejoicing, he offered it for propagation.
