In the reign of Emperor An of Jin, the Tripiṭaka Dharma Master Dharmakṣema of the Central Indian country—called Fafeng in the Liang language—brought the first ten fascicles of the Great Nirvāṇa Sūtra, together with the Bodhisattva Precepts and other texts, to Guzang. Staying at a posthouse and fearing lest the scripture manuscripts be stolen, he slept with them as his pillow. At night, someone pulled Dharmakṣema onto the ground. Startled awake, he thought it was a thief. After this happened for three nights, he heard a voice in the empty sky, saying: 'This is the storehouse of liberation of the Tathāgata; why do you use it as a pillow?' Dharmakṣema then gradually came to realize, and placed it separately in a high place. A thief came at night and tried several times to lift it, but in the end could not lift it at all. The next morning, Dharmakṣema did not find it heavy at all. The thieves regarded him as a holy man, and all came to apologize and take their leave.
