The Silla monk Sŭngyu was a man of Silla. He left home when young and turned his heart toward the Pure Land teachings. Seeing those who recited and upheld the Āgamas, he reviled and scolded them, telling them to abandon them. In a dream he reached the eastern gate of Sukhāvatī. Just as he was about to enter through the gate, immeasurable divine youths were standing outside the gate, and with jeweled staves they drove Sŭngyu out, saying, "When the lesser path is extinguished, that is the sign of the extinction of the great teaching. Using the lesser Dharma as a ladder to ascend to the Great Path—this is the model in your country! You slighted the Āgamas and discarded them without reciting them; you cannot enter the Mahāyāna gate," and so forth. Upon waking from the dream, he wept bitterly, repented his faults, and also upheld and recited the four Āgamas. He then attained welcome to the Pure Land. His disciple also dreamed of the master sitting on a lotus flower, who came and spoke to him, saying, "In the Sahā world I also recited the Āgamas; relying on that former practice, I first attained the lesser path, and before long I shall return and enter the Great."
