Formerly, at the Gomaya vihāra in the country of Gandhāra, there was an arhat named Puṇyaśrī. His six supernatural knowledges and three clarities were purely luminous. Day and night he recited the Madhyama-āgama, never pausing even for a moment. Someone asked, "Master, you are already an ultimate sage; why are you so exclusively devoted to reciting it?" The arhat replied, "I entered the samādhi of recollecting past abodes and, observing, came to know my past karma. Formerly I was born among dogs and accompanied a monk as he walked. The monk recited the Madhyama-āgama; following him, I heard it, took delight in it, and did not bark. Relying on this single good deed, I was born into a brāhmaṇa family in the country of Gandhāra. When I left home, I then attained the fruit of an arhat. Due to these causes and conditions, I constantly recite it without cease."
