Formerly, at the Kavi vihāra in the country of Kapiśa, there were two monks: one upheld the Vinaya Piṭaka, and one upheld the Abhidharma Piṭaka. People all offered supreme food to the Vinaya master. In the middle of the night, gods would arrive and pay homage to the monk who upheld the Vinaya, but not to the monk who upheld the Abhidharma. After more than a month like this, the monk who upheld the Abhidharma harbored anger in his heart. A god scolded him, saying, "The Vinaya opens the way of humans and devas, and even the way to nirvāṇa. Due to these causes and conditions, gods revere those who uphold and recite it. You should not harbor resentment." Thereupon, the monk who upheld the Abhidharma diligently cultivated the Vinaya Piṭaka, and both attained the first fruit. Then the gods made offerings to both monks.
