In Bingzhou there was a monk named Daoru. In this prefecture, most people seven years of age and older knew how to practice recollection of the Buddha. Yet this monk did not practice recollection of the Buddha, nor did he keep the precepts. He kept impure goods and committed transgressions in body without repenting. At the age of sixty-one, he suddenly suffered from a stroke and died after more than a month. After three days, he first revived; his physical movements were agile and light, and his illness was completely cured. He said, "When I first died, I saw Avalokiteśvara and Mahāsthāmaprāpta come, who instructed, taught, benefited, and gladdened me, saying, 'You did not cultivate Pure Land karma; you only heard the titles of the Mahāyāna Vaipulya scriptures in twelve divisions. Due to these causes and conditions, your sinful defilements are slight. We have come from afar to manifest our forms. Your remaining lifespan is not yet exhausted; twelve years from now, you will be born in the Pure Land.' Thereupon, I joined my palms, wept tears, and only then awakened and revived." He then gave away all his possessions, produced the Vaipulya Mahāsaṃnipāta, and also cultivated recollection of the Buddha. On the fifteenth day of the first month in the twelfth year, he finally passed away. Music sounded in the room, heavenly flowers fell like rain, and this was seen and heard by those present.
