Under the Tang, Shi Tanrong of Fazhu Monastery in Luzhou, in the seventh year of the Zhenguan era, upon the request of the faithful layman Chang Ningbao and others, performed the Vaipulya repentance rite at Fazhu Monastery. On the fourteenth day of the seventh month, a śramaṇa of that monastery named Sengding, whose moral conduct was refined and lofty, saw within the ritual arena a great light of five interlaced colors rising and falling. Within it were seven Buddhas, extraordinarily adorned with major and minor marks. They said to Sengding, "I am Vipaśyin Tathāgata, the Lord Free from Attachment, Truly and Perfectly Enlightened. Because your sins are eliminated, I have come to bear witness. However, I am not your root master, so I do not confer vyākaraṇa upon you." In this manner, all six Buddhas spoke the same words. The final Buddha said, "I am your root master, Śākyamuni. Because your sins are eliminated, I have come to confer vyākaraṇa upon you. Tanrong is your good cause for eradicating sins; in the Bhadrakalpa, he shall be named Samantanirvṛta Buddha. Your bodily vessel is pure; later you shall become a Buddha, also named Samantaprabha." Auspicious signs and miraculous responses like these are truly rare to hear of!
