Formerly in the kingdom of Wuqi, an epidemic broke out throughout the land, and more than half the people were wiped out. There was a royal princess named Dianwei. After becoming pregnant, her time was gradually drawing near. The mother was struck by a severe illness, and the fetus in her womb died. Facing death, the royal princess was terrified beyond measure. Gripped entirely by stifling agony, she had nothing to rely on. Fearing [for her life], weeping day and night, the princess recited the Prajñāpāramitāhṛdaya-sūtra. By the power of chanting the scripture, the fetus returned to life, and she gave birth safely. Her illness was cured, and she was restored to health. The child's crying voice was supremely extraordinary, constantly chanting "Mahāprajñāpāramitā." The king and ministers rejoiced, calling his name Polo. When he was three years of age, he intermittently expounded the definitive meaning of prajñā. By the time he reached seven years of age, the prince was brilliant and wise, mastering the Tripiṭaka as an outstanding figure of his time. The common people leaped for joy, marveling at his deeds. The whole country read and recited it; epidemics did not arise, all under heaven was in great peace, and the myriad people lived in safety and joy.
