Second, concerning mileage: this continent is broadly divided into three portions. In the two portions to the north, the land is vast and people are scarce; it is inhabited by the Xiongnu, who are unfit for the practice of the Way. The one portion to the south extends to the three seas; the people are mostly keen and bright, fit to receive the sacred transformation. Therefore, based on the supremacy of the Way, the Great Sage established his capital there. Thus Chengguangzi states: 'Central India is 58,000 li to Zhendan in the east (Zhendan is the name for the Divine Continent, as designated by the people there); 58,000 li to the Golden Land in the south; 58,000 li to the country of Akuja in the west; and 58,000 li to Lake Anavatapta on the Lesser Gandhamādana in the north.' Looking at this overall encompassment and taking the distant and the near, they are equal in distance, thus determining the centre. Its principle is easily apparent.
