史錄曰。商太宰嚭問孔子曰。孰為聖人。孔子曰。西方之人有聖者焉。不治而不亂。不言而自信。不化而自行。蕩蕩乎民無能名焉。老子西昇經云。吾師化遊天竺。善入泥洹。

The historical records state that the Shang Grand Minister Pi asked Confucius: 'Who is a sage?' Confucius said: 'Among the people of the west there is a sage. He does not govern, yet there is no disorder; he does not speak, yet he is naturally believed; he does not teach, yet [the Way] is naturally practiced. Vast and boundless, the people cannot find a name for it!' The *Scripture of Laozi's Western Ascension* says: 'My teacher transformed and traveled to Tianzhu, being skilled at entering nirvāṇa.'
