大唐永徽元年歲維庚戌。終南太一山豐德寺沙門。吳興釋道宣。往參譯經旁觀別傳。文廣難尋故略舉其要。并潤其色同成其類。庶將來好事用裨精爽云。

In the Great Tang, the first year of Yonghui, the year being gengxu, the śramaṇa Shi Daoxuan of Wuxing, residing at Fengde Monastery on Mount Zhongnan Taiyi, having formerly participated in scripture translation and examined separate biographies, and finding the texts vast and difficult to navigate, therefore summarily set forth their essentials, embellished their prose, and arranged them into their respective categories, in the hope that future lovers of learning might find their wits refreshed thereby.
