The kingdom of Cuḷya (Southern India) is over 2,500 li in circuit. The capital is over 10 li in circuit. The population is sparse, and monasteries are few and rough. There are several tens of deva temples, mostly with nirgrantha tīrthikas. East of the city is an Aśoka stupa, where the Buddha saved people and subdued tīrthikas. In an old monastery west of the city, Bodhisattva Deva cross-examined the arhat Uttara (translated here as 'Superior'); after seven rounds, the arhat closed his mouth and did not reply. He secretly used his supernatural power to go to Maitreya's abode, who told him: 'Deva is a buddha of the Bhadrakalpa; he is not someone you can answer.' In the snapping of a finger, he returned and engaged in discussion again. The bodhisattva knew this and said to him: 'This was explained by the great sage Maitreya!' Travelling 1,600 li through the southern forests and wilderness, one reaches [the following kingdom].
