The kingdom of Varaṇa (in Western India) is over four thousand li in circuit. The capital city is over twenty li in circuit. It is densely populated. It belongs to Kapiśa. There are several tens of monasteries with three hundred monks, who study both the Mahāyāna and Hīnayāna. There are five deva temples of the ash-smearing tīrthikas. The land has many mountains and forests. South of the city is an ancient monastery where the Buddha once traveled. An adjacent stūpa marks the traces where the four buddhas walked and sat. Common tradition says that on its west this kingdom borders the kingdom of Jaguda, which is situated amidst great mountains. Northwest of here, one crosses great mountains again for over two thousand li, leaves the borders of Western India, and enters the territory of Hu customs, the kingdom of Jāguḍa. Further northeast for one thousand six hundred li, one enters the borders of Kapiśa, where the Northern Route and Central Route meet. Briefly enumerating from the Tujue southward within the three seas, there are altogether one hundred and fifty kingdoms; those not included in India number seventy-one kingdoms (from the Tujue northwards to the Northern Sea, nothing has been heard of travellers' journeys, hence there is nothing to record).
