Zhang Ye, styled Laimin, was a man of Wan in Nanyang. Later he moved to Chaisang in Xunyang and formed marital ties with Tao Yuanliang. His learning encompassed both China and India, and he was skilled in literary composition. The province recommended him as a Flourishing Talent; he was appointed as Officer of Merit in the Headquarters of the General of the Southern Palace, Attendant Official of the Provincial Government, and later summoned as a Sanqi Changshi (Cavalier Regular Attendant), none of which he accepted. By nature he was filial and fraternal; he ceded all of his family's old estate of fields and residences to his younger brother. A taste of fine food or a peck of grain he shared together with all nine generations of his clan. In food and clothing, he was personally frugal; while others could not bear such hardship, he did not change his joy. In all, his writings transmitted to the world amounted to more than ten thousand words. He revered Master Yuan as his teacher, taking the same path as Liu [Yimin] and Lei [Cizong]. When Master Yuan died and was buried on the West Ridge, Xie Lingyun composed the inscription, and Ye wrote the preface, calling himself a disciple. He died in the fourteenth year of Yixi, the year wuwu, at the age of sixty-nine.
