Tanheng was a native of Hedong. He left home as a young boy. At the age of thirteen, he lectured on the Mahāyāna sūtras and treatises, profoundly comprehending the ultimate truth. When he received the full precepts, he was thoroughly versed in both inner [Buddhist] and outer [non-Buddhist] texts. His virtuous conduct was solitary and pure, unchanging through the bitter cold of winter. As his spirit reposed in secluded realms, herds of deer grew tame around him. Having truly no thought of self, other creatures were naturally pacified. Vowing to cultivate the Western [direction], he joined the common refuge of the Pure Society. He died in the fourteenth year of the Yixi reign-period of the Jin, a wuwu year (418 CE), at the age of seventy-one.
