Banished, I bade farewell to the palace gates, parted from the court flock; / Grown old, I enter Mount Lu, followed by the deer. / In the gathering dusk, desolate, I seek lodging at the temple; / In the clear dawn, pure and tranquil, I keep an appointment with the monk. / At the twin Lin temples, I rise after hearing the bell; / On odd-numbered days, you hasten to enter the Hall of State. / The heights and depths of the roc and the quail are each fixed by destiny; / Do not exhaust your heart and strength with long-distance longing.
