Most begin to lodge their minds [in the Dao] in their later years; / you alone have stilled your mind while young. / Admiring Duke Xie, you initiated your study at the vihāra; / relying on monks for literature, you seek to observe the marvelous. / A clear spring pours before the front steps; / a limpid pond shines through the north window. / Fruits and herbs grow mingled and fragrant; / pines and bamboos stand sparse and anciently steep. / Repeatedly climbing to the realm of the recluse, / you often gaze out upon the fragrant season. / Searching for chestnuts in the caves of dark apes; / gathering fungi along the ridges of the boat forest. / How could hemp robes keep out the cold? / Simple vegetables are not for satisfying hunger. / Though you are content with the humble alley to the north, / how could you freeze the luster of blue and purple robes? / The commandery has a couch for honoring the worthy; / the court registers flatteries for recommended scholars. / If you wish to ride in the vermilion-wheeled carriage, / do not fear the reproach of a summons to the mountain.
