Tanshun was a native of Huanglong. He left home in his youth and personally received the instructions of Kumārajīva. In long-held doubts and chronic perplexities he achieved great breakthroughs. His discussions were refined and erudite; he lectured on and expounded the various sūtras, elucidated and praised the Mahāyāna, and clearly comprehended the profound and subtle, without attachment to form or emptiness. Master [Kumāra]jīva once sighed in praise, saying, "Tanshun is truly an extraordinary vessel!" He entered Lushan, following Master Yuan to cultivate together in the Western Pure Society. His aspiration for the Way was uncommon, taking benefiting and delivering beings as his foundation. Liu Zunkao, the Commandant of Pacifying the Man Barbarians, established a temple in Jianglin and invited the master to inaugurate it; Master Yuan dispatched him to comply. He died in the second year of the Yuanjia reign-period, a jichou year (425 CE), at the age of seventy-nine.
