Ninety li from the Temple. It is north of the city of Hengyang. The abbey overlooks the great river where there is the Stone Drum. The rear cave is the western gate of Zhuling. It was the site where the Tang Realized Man Bai and Master of Alchemy Dong ascended to heaven as transcendents. The transcendent Shi Ke had a complete poem bidding farewell to the Palace Attendant Lei Chenghao who was commissioned to Hengyang, which says: 'Hengyang is just three thousand li from here; / The road the whole way is very smooth and calm. / Deep and secluded gates and walls lie beyond the Three Chu; / Cool breezes sweep ponds and pavilions before the Five Peaks. / To the west, merchants and travelers come to the marketplaces; / By the shoals of Eastern Yi, fishing boats cluster together. / Once retired from public affairs, there will truly be nothing else to do / But visit the divine transcendents at the rear cave of Zhuling.' According to the *Record of the Xiang River*, whenever this Stone Drum resounded of its own accord, troops and armor would arise. Some say Lu Long pushed the drum into the deep pool; the name of Lu Long is not known in detail. Verifying it by the drum today, some also say this was the Lu Long Shrine, though the era of its founding is not known. In the eighth month of the first year of the Longshuo era, an imperial decree sent the Daoist master Guo Xingzhen to offer a jiao sacrifice at the sacred peak; thereupon he destroyed the shrine and ceased sacrifices to it. Ever after, this brought calamity and disaster upon the people of the commandery. Nowadays, the common people sacrifice to him again. In the fifth year of the Zhenguan era, the former Duke Chancellor Qi built the Hejiang Pavilion on this hilltop. Du Xunhe of the Tang had a poem inscribed at Xunzhen Abbey: 'Silent and lonely is the White Cloud Gate; / Seeking the real, one does not meet the real. / Surely it is only the cranes atop the pines / Who are the people within the grotto! / In the medicinal herb garden, flower fragrances are rare; / By springs and sands, deer tracks are fresh. / I inscribe a poem, leaving my family and personal name, / To be close to this place in days to come.' Furthermore, in the Dazhong Xiangfu era, there was Master Changxuan, Shi Zhongyuan (courtesy name Qingzong), from Xixia Grotto in Guilin, who served as abbot. His practice of the Dao surpassed his peers, and his poetic talent shook Chu. He renovated it entirely, rebuilding the White Cloud Veranda, which overlooks the Qingcao Crossing below. Before it were the White Cloud Hall and the White Lotus Pond. When I spent the summer in this hall in the bingyin year of the Shaoxing era, I also left forty words behind; though insufficient to evoke those ancient worthies, they simply record the affairs of Zhuling. The poem says: 'I love the realm of the Xiao and Xiang, (The abbey faces the Xiaoxiang Gate) / The grotto-heaven behind Zhuling. / A guest inside the White Cloud Hall, / Sleeping at the head of the Qingcao Crossing. / A small skiff pulls in red carp; / In a secluded pond, white lotuses are planted. / Nourishing the real is well suited to this place; / Wind and moon remain as they ever were.' In the Jingde era of our present dynasty, its current name plaque was bestowed in change.
