Tian Xuying, styled Genyi, was a man of the state of Qi. By nature he was simple and artless, speaking his mind without hesitation or taboo. During the Kaihuang era he attended to his parents in You County; because of the clamor and bustle, he moved to Nanyue, personally farming below Zigai Peak to fulfill his filial duties for over fifty years. After his mother passed away, he wandered the Five Peaks, giving free rein to his will in self-contentment. During the Longshuo era, the prefect Tian built the Hall for the Descending of the Real at Hengyue Abbey for him to reside in. Tian Yucheng praised him with the inscription “Sharing the Jade Disk”. The registers and methods of the Grand Cavern of Supreme Clarity which he received were transmitted from Master Zhengyi.
