Liao Chong, styled Qingxu, lived in Lianshan commandery in the third year of Datong of the Liang. Praised for his talent and virtue, he served as the commandery's registrar. Later he resigned his seal of office to wander and seek the essentials of the Dao, dwelling on Mount Songgao. After a long time, he passed through Jingzhu. Two spirits of Gong'an caused strange phenomena, raising wind and waves to block his boat. He thereupon subdued them and commanded them to protect the boat, crossing over to Nanyue. At the summit of Zhurong Peak he met the Perfected Lord of Taiping, who transmitted to him the essentials of the Dao. He then said to the two spirits, “I will dwell at Chenyang to compound the elixir. You may guard the furnace for me. When the elixir is completed on a future day, you shall also have a share.” When the elixir was completed, he returned to his home village. He always rode a tiger and held a snake as a whip. When he was over a hundred years old, in the second year of Guangtian, he ascended amid dark clouds and wind.
