Liu Shanfu, while accompanying and serving an official south of the ranges, was returning north and moored his boat at Dongting Lake to go ashore. Seeing a shrine to Heavenly King Vaiśravaṇa of the North, he went to pay his respects. Observing the shrine halls in ruins, he inscribed [on the wall]: 'Weather-beaten walls through wind and rain have known how many springs? / Grass grows verdant across the courtyard, coated in a layer of dust. / Clearly the gods and immortals exert no spiritual resonance; / How then could flourishing and decline be left to mortal men?' That night, he dreamed of a divine transcendent who said, 'I am the god of Nanyue; why have you insulted me?' Moments later, fierce winds and waves arose, nearly capsizing his boat. Only after he showed regret, apologized, and removed the poetic plaque did the storm cease.
