including imperial calligraphies of the three scriptures: the Huangting, the Daode, and the Yinfu. The imperially composed edict stated: 'Since retiring to dwell in the detached palace, our daily business has been nourishing the spirit and cultivating the will. We yearn to see your demeanor and warmly converse in intimate discourse on the Dao. Fortunately you will soon order your carriage to share our leisure and ease. We send this dedicated message in haste to express our utmost sentiments.' The Sovereign also ordered a painter-in-attendance of the Academy to paint the Master's portrait. The Sovereign personally composed a eulogy, which stated: 'Huangfu, the gentleman of high standing, / Whose brow and eyes are those of the ranks of immortals. / Reviving the world through the Dao, / Who can calculate his years? / A solitary crane in the wilderness, / White clouds moving across the sky. / Lifting his beard with a laugh, / He accords with the natural order.'
