12.66

答曰。重尋高論。以為君道運通理同三大。是以前條已粗言意以為君人之道。竊同高旨。至於君臣之敬。則理盡名教。今沙門既不臣王侯。故敬與之廢耳。

I reply: Re-examining your noble argument, you consider that the ruler's Dao brings pervasive life, its principle identical to the Three Greats. Therefore, in the previous section I already roughly stated my opinion that the Dao of ruling men privately accords with your noble intention. As for the reverence between ruler and minister, its principle is exhausted in the teachings of names. Now, since monks do not act as ministers to kings and lords, reverence toward them is discarded accordingly.
