Vimalakīrti said: 'All dharmas arise as forms from settled intent.' Thus the omen stirs at the inception and the event responds at the end; when a thought arises there is [existence], and when ideation ceases there is non-existence. Where the intent is at peace, whatever it encounters is smoothed away; where the passions are obstructed, wherever one goes there is stagnation. Speaking from this, the source of flow and stagnation lies in oneself, not in things. If fear is born in the mind, vulnerabilities are seized upon from without. Once external vulnerabilities are seized upon, internal fear knots ever tighter; if one merely dreads losing something, there is nowhere [this dread] will not reach. Hence the scripture states that when a gentleman fears, non-human beings take advantage of him. If one can truly abide the mind in principle and make the heavenly bolt firm within, then neither humans nor ghosts can find an opening, and karmic retributions will naturally cease. The ten thousand existences will have no means to entangle him; the host of evils will be unable to strike him.
