14.18

余所集弘明為法禦侮。通人雅論勝士妙說。摧邪破惑之衝。弘道護法之塹。亦已備矣。然智者不迷。迷者乖智。若導以深法終於莫領。故復撮舉世典指事取徵。言非榮華理歸質實。庶迷塗之人不遠而復總釋眾疑。故曰弘明。論云。

My collection, the Hongming [ji], was made to defend the Dharma against offense. Elegant treatises by broad-minded scholars and marvelous expositions by superior men—the rams that smash heterodoxy and destroy doubt, the moats that propagate the Way and defend the Dharma—are already complete within it. However, the wise are not deluded, while the deluded run contrary to wisdom. If one guides them by the profound Dharma, in the end they will fail to grasp it. Therefore, I have once again summarized secular classics and pointed to affairs to draw proof. The language is not ornate, and the principle returns to substance and truth. May people on the deluded paths return before straying too far, so that all doubts are fully resolved. Hence it is called the Hongming lun.
