4.41

答曰。足下論仁義。則云情之者少。利之者多。言施惠則許其遺賢忘報在情既少。熟能遺賢利之言多。曷云忘報。若能推樂施之士。以期欲仁之儔演忘報之意。引向義之心。則義寔在斯。求仁不遠。

[The opponent] answers: When you discuss benevolence and righteousness, you say that those who genuinely feel them are few, while those who find them advantageous are many. In speaking of bestowing kindness, you approve of forgetting worthy men and forgetting recompense. Since those who genuinely feel it are already few, who could forget worthy men? When you say that those who find it advantageous are many, how can one speak of forgetting recompense? If one could urge those who delight in giving to aspire to the ranks of those desiring benevolence, expound the meaning of forgetting recompense, and guide their minds toward righteousness, then righteousness would indeed reside here, and seeking benevolence would not be far off.
