或問曰。沙門袒服出自佛教是禮與。答曰然。問曰。三代殊制其禮不同。質文之變備於前典。而佛教出乎其外。論者咸有疑焉。若有深致。幸誨其未聞。

Someone asked: 'The śramaṇa's baring the shoulder comes from the Buddhist teachings; is it ritual propriety?' I answered: 'Yes.' He asked: 'The Three Dynasties had distinct institutions and their ritual proprieties were not identical; the changes between substance and ornament were fully recorded in earlier canons, yet the Buddhist teachings fall outside them. The debaters all have doubts about this. If there is a deep import, please instruct me in what I have not heard.'
